Bans

Players signed up for the gathering ban nations with the “Bans” button under the gathering card, and nobody gets a banned nation in this game. Bans are optional: in FFA each player bans up to two nations, in Duel up to three, and you can change bans only until the start.

Participants

  • Player — opens the bans menu, sets and removes their own bans until the game starts.
  • Moderator — bans nations only when they play in this gathering themselves.
  • Bot — sends the nation menu, tracks the limit, shows bans on the gathering card and keeps banned nations out of both the draft and the “Nation Assignment” message.

B-->>G: hands out nations without the banned ones
  1. Open the bans menu. Press the red “Bans” button under the gathering card. The bot sends a menu that only you see. It has 43 nations on three pages, up to 15 on each. The menu works for 3 minutes after you open it or after the last press in it. Then open a new one with the same “Bans” button.
  2. Find the nation. The “<” and “>” buttons at the bottom of the menu switch pages, and “<<” and “>>” go to the first and last page. In the middle you see the page number, for example “1/3”. The bot writes nation names in the language of your Discord client, and the gathering card and replies about bans in the server's language. See Bot language.
  3. Press a nation. The ban appears on the gathering card right away: under your name is a “Bans:” line with icons of the banned nations.
  4. Remove the ban if you change your mind. Press the same nation in the menu again, and it disappears from the “Bans:” line. You can remove only your own bans.
  5. Wait for the start. When a game participant or a moderator presses “Start with Draft” or “Skip Draft & Start”, bans are locked until the end of the game. See Starting a game.

Nations on the menu pages

The order of nations in the menu is the same in any client language, and the list is the same for Vanilla, Patch and KEK. In English the pages look like this:

Page Nations
«1/3» America, Arabia, Assyria, Austria, Aztec, Babylon, Brazil, Byzantium, Carthage, Celts, China, Denmark, Holland, Egypt, England
«2/3» Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Huns, Inca, India, Indonesia, Iroquois, Japan, Korea, Maya, Mongolia, Morocco, Ottoman
«3/3» Persia, Poland, Polynesia, Portugal, Rome, Russia, Shoshone, Siam, Songhai, Spain, Sweden, Venice, Zulu

Rules and exceptions

Bans are optional: up to two in FFA, up to three in Duel

Each player bans up to two nations in FFA and up to three in Duel. You don't have to ban any: bans don't affect the start. The limit depends only on the mode and is the same on all servers. You can't change it. In a full FFA gathering, that's up to 12 bans per game, in Duel up to 6.

Only one player can ban a given nation

If another player has already banned the nation, the bot replies “Nation already banned by @Orion.” and mentions whoever banned it. You can't remove someone else's ban: only the player who set it can.

Only players signed up for the gathering ban

Every ban belongs to a player of the gathering. The game creator joins the gathering automatically, and the rest sign up with the “Join | Leave” button. A moderator who doesn't play in this gathering doesn't ban nations. Anyone who isn't signed up for the gathering and isn't a moderator gets the reply “You are not allowed to perform this action.” when they press “Bans”.

Everyone sees each player's bans

The bans menu doesn't show who banned what: all nation buttons in it look the same and are gray. Bans are visible on the gathering card, which everyone in the game gathering channel sees: under each player who banned something is a “Bans:” line with icons of their nations. After the start, the same line is on the game card in the game thread, hidden under a spoiler. Press it to see the nations. See Game thread.

You can change bans only until the game starts

Before the start, you can set, remove or replace a ban at any time, even after pressing “Ready”. After the start, the gathering card disappears with its “Bans” button, and the bans stay as they are until the end of the game.

Bans disappear with the player

When a player leaves the gathering with the “Join | Leave” button or gets kicked with the “Kick” button, their bans are removed. Those nations are free for other players again. See Creating a game and gathering players.

Nobody gets a banned nation

When the game starts with a draft, the bot gives each player three nations to choose from, and none of them is banned. After a start without a draft, banned nations aren't among the buttons of the “Nation Assignment” message in the game thread. You can't pick a banned nation after the start either. See Picking nations and swapping slots.

What can go wrong

  • The bot says “Nation already banned by @Orion.” The player mentioned in the reply has already banned this nation. Pick another nation or ask them to remove the ban.
  • The bot says “You can't ban more than 2 nations”. You have already used all your bans for this mode. In Duel, the bot says the same with the number 3. To replace a ban, first remove one of yours: press that nation in the menu.
  • The bot says “You are not allowed to perform this action.” Only players signed up for the gathering ban. Sign up with the “Join | Leave” button and press “Bans” again.
  • The bans menu is gone. The menu closes after 3 minutes without presses. The bans you set are kept: you see them in the “Bans:” line on the gathering card. Open a new menu with the “Bans” button.
  • You can't tell which nations are already banned. The menu doesn't show it. Look at the “Bans:” lines on the gathering card.
  • Other players' bans vanished from the gathering card. The player left the gathering or was kicked, and their bans disappeared with them. You can ban those nations again.
  • The “Bans” button is gone. If the game started, the gathering card disappeared with its buttons. Bans don't change after the start, and you can see them under a spoiler on the game card in the game thread. If the gathering was cancelled with the 🗑️ button or nobody pressed its buttons for 3 hours, there is no game, and the bans disappeared with the gathering. See Creating a game and gathering players.
