Sign-in and privacy

Signing in with Discord confirms your account. It opens the server's games, the game pages, the player profiles and the save inspector on the CivBot site, and passes the site only your ID, name and avatar. Your sign-in data lives in your browser, and the site doesn't keep the saves you only inspect.

What signing in does

Signing in splits the site's visitors into guests and signed-in visitors. A guest sees the home page: a short tour of the site, a field where you can try a save, and the “Sign in with Discord” button. Trying a save gives the same report as the inspector, but with three metrics and without player names. See Save inspector. Everything else opens after you sign in:

  • “Overview” shows your games, the server's games in progress, recent results, your week, the month and the leaderboard;
  • “Games” shows all of the server's games, with a search by players;
  • the game page shows the lineup, nations, saves, charts and map of one game;
  • the player profile shows a player's totals for a chosen period;
  • “Save inspector” gives a full breakdown of a save, with all metrics and player names;
  • the search in the top bar finds players and game numbers.

Anyone with a Discord account can sign in. The site doesn't check which servers you belong to, and it doesn't post anything in your name. There is no separate password for the site: you sign in with your Discord account.

All sections show only the games of the server the site works with. Games from other servers don't get in. See Games overview, Games on the site, Game page and Player profile.

What it includes

Part What it means
The “Sign in with Discord” button It stands on the home page and leads to a Discord page where you agree to sign in
Data from Discord Account ID, name and avatar. The site doesn't ask for your email or your list of servers
Sign-in in the browser An encrypted cookie that works as long as Discord allows
Account menu Your avatar on the right of the top bar: the label “Signed in as”, your name, on wide screens the “Full width” switch, and the “Sign out” item
Account settings Page width and the “New” marks you've already seen. For a player the bot knows, they are stored on the site
Save A file that the site reads and doesn't store, until you add it to a game on the game page
Chosen language Stored only in this browser. The language menu with the code UK, EN or RU is there for a guest and after signing in

How to sign in

  1. Press “Sign in with Discord”. The button is on the site's home page. Check: a Discord page opens.
  2. Agree to sign in on Discord. Do it within 10 minutes after you press the button. Check: the site opens “Overview”, and your avatar shows on the right of the top bar.

If you opened a link to a game or a player profile, the site offers to sign in with Discord right away, and after you agree, it brings you back to the same page. Signing in from the home page ends on “Overview”.

What the site takes from Discord

The site asks Discord only for basic access to your account. It takes three things from there:

  • Account ID. The site uses it to find the games where you held a slot on the server the site works with;
  • Name. This is your display name in Discord, or your username if you have no display name;
  • Avatar. This is your profile picture, or the default Discord avatar if you have none.

The site doesn't ask for your email, your list of servers or the right to write messages. It checks your name and avatar against Discord when you open a page, but no more than once every 5 minutes. So a new name or avatar doesn't show up on the site right away.

What the site stores about a visitor

The sign-in itself lives in your browser, in an encrypted cookie. It holds your ID, name, avatar link and the permission from Discord. Only the CivBot site can read it. When you sign in, the site writes nothing on its own side. A guest who isn't signed in gets no cookie.

For a player the bot already knows, the site stores two account settings on its own side: the “Full width” choice and the list of “New” marks you've already seen. They're saved when you switch the width, or open the account menu while it carries a “New” mark, and they work in any browser. A visitor the bot doesn't know yet has the width choice only in this browser.

The site remembers your other choices only in this browser: the language, the inspector's pinned metrics, and the look of the game and profile pages. The site takes your games from the bot's game history.

Separately from signing in, the site counts page views through Vercel Web Analytics and loads its font from Google Fonts.

How to sign out

Press your avatar on the right of the top bar. A menu opens with the label “Signed in as” and your name. Choose “Sign out”. The site deletes the sign-in cookie from your browser. On “Overview” or in the “Save inspector” you'll see the home page, and from a game page, a player profile or the “Games” list, the site offers to sign in with Discord again right away. You can sign out at any time and from any section.

Your sign-in also ends when you revoke the site's access in the Discord settings. The site notices this at its next check against Discord. It shows the home page the next time you open or reload the site.

What the site does with a save

You can open a save as a guest on the home page or, after you sign in, in the “Save inspector” section. In both cases the site only reads the file. On the home page, next to the file field, it says: “We read the file and keep nothing.” The file name stays in your browser, and the site receives only the contents of the save. See Save inspector.

There are three exceptions:

  • A save from a game still in progress. If a save looks like a game that isn't finished, the site shows nothing from it. It leaves a record of the attempt in that game's history, with the file's fingerprint and, if you're signed in, with your account.
  • A save on the game page. A player of the game uploads a save on that game's page. The site stores the file and attaches it to the game. See Game saves on the site.
  • The “Join the game” button. The site asks Steam whether the host and the game's players are in a lobby only when you press this button on the game page.

Site language

The site works in three languages: English, Ukrainian and Russian. Until you choose a language yourself, the site takes the first language in your browser settings that it supports, or English if there is none.

You choose the language in the language menu. Its button shows the code of the current language: UK, EN or RU, and in the menu each language is named in that language: “English”, “Українська”, “Русский”. The menu is on the home page and on the top bar after you sign in. The choice is stored only in this browser, and the page reloads. A page link is the same for all languages: everyone opens it in their own language.

How it connects

  • Games overview is the section that opens right after you sign in. See Games overview.
  • Game page. You need to sign in to open it, and only the players of this game can change the game on it. See Game page.
  • Player profile opens after you sign in. See Player profile.
  • Save inspector gives a full breakdown of a save and is available only after you sign in. See Save inspector.
  • Bot language. The site's language menu doesn't change the language the bot writes in on Discord. See Bot language.

Sign-in states

A site visitor is in one of two states.

State What it means When it happens
Guest You see the home page with the site tour and the save try-out On the first visit, after “Sign out”, or when the sign-in has expired
You're signed in You see “Overview”, “Games”, the game pages, the player profiles and the “Save inspector”, and your avatar on the right of the top bar After you agree on the Discord page

A link to a game, a player profile or the games list takes a guest straight to signing in with Discord. Any other site address, including the inspector's, takes a guest to the home page. The comparison shows what exactly signing in opens:

Guest After signing in
Site sections Home page “Overview”, “Games”, a game page, a player profile, “Save inspector”
Your games — The “My recent games” block on “Overview”
Save report The same report with three metrics, nations instead of names, and empty diagnostics All metrics, player names and diagnostics
Changes to a game — Only the players of this game

See Save inspector.

Rules

You need to confirm the sign-in within 10 minutes

After you press “Sign in with Discord”, you have 10 minutes to agree on Discord. Each press of the button starts the sign-in over, so agree on the Discord page you opened last.

Discord sets how long the sign-in lasts

A sign-in usually lasts a week, but never more than 30 days. When the time is up, the site shows the home page again after a reload or the next visit, and you need to sign in once more. A sign-in ends early if you press “Sign out”, revoke the site's access in the Discord settings, or clear the site's data in your browser.

A sign-in works in one browser only

The sign-in is stored in one browser's cookie. In another browser or on another device, sign in separately. If you clear the site's data in the browser, the sign-in ends too. The account settings stored on the site for a player the bot knows work in any browser.

Only the players of a game can change it on the site

Only the players who have a seat in this game can finish the game, attach a save, match players and pick a nation on the site. Other signed-in visitors, including a moderator without a seat in the game, can only look. A moderator still finishes the game with the /game finish command and picks nations in the game thread on Discord. See Game page.

Inspecting a save stores nothing, but the site stores a game's save

The site reads the file, shows the report in your browser, and keeps neither the file nor the report. Inspecting a save doesn't change the game history or the rating. In the “Save inspector”, a label reminds you: “Inspecting a file does not attach it to a game.” When a player uploads a file on the game page, the site stores it and attaches it to that game. See Save inspector and Game saves on the site.

Names from a save aren't linked to Discord

The player names in the report are the ones recorded in the save itself. The site doesn't match them to Discord accounts, and the guest report has no names at all: the cards are labeled with a slot number and a nation. At the top of the report in the “Save inspector”, next to the file name, there is an ⓘ icon with the explanation: “Names come from the save; Discord accounts are not linked.” See Save inspector.

What can go wrong

  • After you return from Discord, you see the home page with the “Sign in with Discord” button again. The sign-in didn't happen: you declined on the Discord page, or Discord didn't respond. Press “Sign in with Discord” again.
  • You signed in before, but the site shows the home page. The sign-in expired, you pressed “Sign out” or revoked the site's access in Discord, the site's data was cleared, or you opened the site in another browser. Sign in again with the “Sign in with Discord” button.
  • A link to a game took you straight to signing in with Discord. You aren't signed in: game pages and player profiles are available only after you sign in. Agree to sign in, and the site brings you back to the same page.
  • The game page has no “Finish the game” or “Attach save” buttons. Only the players of this game see them. See Game page.
  • The site shows an old name or avatar. The site checks them against Discord no more than once every 5 minutes, when you open a page. If Discord doesn't respond at that moment, the last known name and avatar stay, and the next check happens within a minute. Reload the page a little later.
  • An open save disappeared after you changed the language. Changing the language reloads the page, and the save report closes. Choose the file again.
  • The language doesn't change after you pick it in the menu. The browser blocks the site from storing data: the page reloads, and the browser decides the language again. Allow the site to store data, or change the order of languages in your browser settings.
