Bot language

CivBot writes public messages in the server's primary language and private replies mostly in the language of your Discord client. This page covers which language each bot message comes in, which languages the bot knows and which texts are the same on every server.

Where the bot gets its language

The bot takes its language from two sources:

  • Server language — the server's primary language in the Discord settings. It is the same for everyone, so the bot uses it for everything the whole channel sees.
  • Your Discord client language — the language you chose in your own Discord app. The bot mostly uses it for what only you see.

Which languages the bot knows

The bot writes in three languages: Ukrainian, Russian and English. For any other Discord language, it writes in English.

How to change the server language

A server admin sets the primary language in Discord, in the server's Community settings. These settings exist only on a server with Community turned on. Until Community is turned on or the language is changed, Discord treats English as the primary language, and the bot writes in English.

After the change, the bot writes new cards, event log entries and notifications in the new language. The /game refresh command redraws the game card in a thread right away. The game panel buttons stay in the old language until a moderator runs /moderator panel again. See Game panel.

How to change your Discord client language

Everyone picks the client language in the settings of their own Discord app. The names of the /game group commands and most of the bot's private replies depend on it. Cards in channels don't change with it.

The CivBot site has its own language menu and doesn't depend on the Discord language. See Sign-in and privacy.

What the bot writes in the server language

The bot uses the server language for everything everyone in a channel sees:

Message Where you see it
The gathering card and the buttons under it Game gathering channel
The game card, the “Choose who plays which nation” and “Swap requests between players” menus, the “Cancel game” button Game thread
The “Nation Assignment” message and its nation buttons Game thread
The list of recent games and the “Player Stats” and “Info” buttons Game panel
Event log entries Event log
Reply cards for a save dropped into the game thread (“Save accepted”, “Save not accepted” and others), and the “Open the game” and “Save inspector” buttons Game thread
The “Keep this game's story” card with the “On site” button, and the “Results on site” button under a finished game's card Game thread
Gathering notification Notification channel
The player stats from /stats show The channel where the command was run

The bot labels the “Player Stats” and “Info” buttons in the language the server had when /moderator panel ran, and doesn't change it afterward. See Game panel.

What the bot writes in your Discord client language

The bot mostly writes what only you see in the language of your Discord client:

Reply When it comes
The “Choose game type” message After the “FFA” or “Duel” button on the game panel
The “↗ Explore CivBot features ↗” help card After the “Info” button on the game panel
Player stats After the “Player Stats” button on the game panel or the “Show Stats” item
Nation names in the bans menu After the “Bans” button on the gathering card
The “Choose a player to kick” menu After the “Kick” button on the gathering card
The “Notify gathering” window and the replies to it After the “Notify gathering” button on the gathering card
“Refreshed” After /game refresh
“The winner must be a player of this game.” After /game finish, when the winner has no seat in the game
Replies of the “Profile on site” item: the link button, “The site does not show this server's games.”, “This player has no games on the site yet.” After the “Profile on site” item in the Apps menu
“All players must pick their nations before finishing!” After /game finish, while someone has no nation picked
Replies to /guild notifications After the gathering notification setup commands

If your client language is neither Ukrainian nor Russian, these replies come in English. In English, the warning about nations reads “All players must pick their nations before finishing!” See Bot messages.

Private replies in the server language

The bot writes a few replies that only you see in the server language:

Reply When it comes
“You are not allowed to perform this action.” After a button of a game you don't play in, when you aren't a moderator
“This game has ended or was deleted. Create a new game.” After a button on a card whose game no longer exists
“You can't ban more than 2 nations”, “Nation already banned by @Vega.” After a nation button in the bans menu, although the nation names there are in the language of your Discord client
The player picker menu: “❌ Remove selection”, “Currently: …”, “No nation selected”, “✅ Nation assignment removed” After a nation button in the “Nation Assignment” message
Nation names in /nations stats After the command; by default only you see the reply

See Bot messages and Picking nations and swapping slots.

Command names

Only the /game group and the “Profile on site” item in the Apps menu have Ukrainian and Russian names. Discord shows the name in the language of your client:

Ukrainian Russian Other languages
Finish a game /гра завершити /игра завершить /game finish
Refresh the game card /гра оновити /игра обновить /game refresh
Options переможець, тип_перемоги, ходи, гра победитель, тип_победы, ходы, игра winner, win_type, turns, game

The win types in the win_type option are translated too. In a Ukrainian client they are “Туристична 🎨”, “Наукова 🧪”, “Дипломатична 🕊️”, “Військова 🗡️” and “Визнання переможця 🤝”. See Finishing a game.

All other commands have only English names and options, whatever the Discord language. These include /stats show, /nations stats, /gametime, /leaderboard show, /moderator panel, /guild config and /search games_by_players. The “Show Stats” item in the Apps menu is English too, while the “Profile on site” item is translated: in a Ukrainian client it reads “Профіль на сайті”, in a Russian one “Профиль на сайте”, and in other languages “Profile on site”. Discord shows the hints for /gametime and for the options of /search games_by_players in Russian. See Bot commands.

What is always in the same language

These texts are the same on every server and depend on neither the server language nor your Discord client language:

Leaderboard Header in Russian, columns in English “Топ игроков”, “Rating”, “Wins”, “Games”
/gametime Russian “День недели”, “Время”
/nations stats English, except nation names «Nation Statistics», «🚫 BANS», «✅ PICKS»
/guild config English «Configure your server!», «Delete this message»

Replies of the “Choose who plays which nation” and “Swap requests between players” menus English «Multiple selection for Orion», «All your swap requests have been cancelled.»
The game mode and game type buttons Not translated «FFA», «Duel», «Vanilla», «Patch», «KEK»

What each reply means and what to do next: Bot messages.

What can go wrong

  • Cards and the log are in English, although people on the server speak Ukrainian. The server's primary language in Discord is English or a language the bot doesn't know. This also happens when Community isn't turned on for the server. A server admin sets the primary language in Discord, in the server's Community settings.
  • The game panel buttons are in a different language than the cards. The panel was placed when the server had another language. A moderator runs /moderator panel again, and the new panel gets the server's current language.
  • A private reply is in a different language than the card. Most private replies come in the language of your Discord client, while cards come in the server language. To make them match, pick the same language in your Discord client as the server's primary language.
  • /game finish isn't in the command list. Discord shows the name in the language of your client. In a Ukrainian client it is /гра завершити, in a Russian one /игра завершить, and in other languages /game finish.
  • Russian or English text on a Ukrainian-speaking server. The leaderboard, /gametime, /guild config and a few replies use one language on all servers. The list is in What is always in the same language.
