Charts and player comparison¶
Charts and player comparison are the “Charts” tab in the “Map & charts” block, and the “Play” and “Compare” lenses in the “Who played what” section of the game page: science, culture, production, policies and a radar with seven axes, all read from the attached save. Everything is read from the save attached to the game and changes nothing in the game.

Who can see it¶
You open the game page only after you sign in with Discord: a guest lands on the sign-in page. The charts and the “Play” and “Compare” lenses only show data, so everyone who is signed in can see them. The participants of this game attach the save and match the players. See Game saves on the site.
The “Charts” tab¶
The “Map & charts” block on the game page has two tabs: “Charts” and “Map”. “Map” is open first. For more about it, see Game map. Your tab choice stays while you switch lenses on the page.
When charts are available, the “Charts” card shows a caption like “6 metrics · 4 players” and the hint “Turn by turn, in the same workspace as the Save inspector.” The “Hide charts” button collapses them, and “Show charts” expands them again. Inside is the same workspace as in the inspector, only with the colors and avatars of this game's players. See Save inspector.
Charts open when two conditions are met: a save is attached to the game and the game is finished, and every player in the save is matched to a player in the game. A scrapped game doesn't wait for matching, and its charts open at once. Until the conditions are met, a single line appears instead of the charts:
| Situation | What the card shows |
|---|---|
| The game isn't finished yet | “Science, culture and production per player open once the game is finished.” |
| The save's players aren't matched yet | “Science, culture and production per player appear once the players above are confirmed.” |
| The save has no turn-by-turn statistics | “No player histories in this save” and the explanation “This file has no turn-by-turn statistics. Missing data is shown as unavailable, never as zero.” |
The “Lens” switch¶
In the “Who played what” section, the “Lens” switch stands above the player cards with three buttons: “Lobby”, “Play” and “Compare”. Next to it is the “Full” / “Compact” switch, which changes how the cards look. It isn't there in the “Compare” lens.
- “Lobby” shows the player cards with their nations, as on the game page. This lens is always open.
- “Play” shows a card for each player with figures, policies and branches.
- “Compare” shows a radar and a table that put the players side by side.
“Play” opens when the game's charts are open: the save is attached, the game is finished and the players are matched (a scrapped game with a save doesn't need matching). “Compare” also needs the save to have statistics. A closed lens is dimmed, and you can't press it. A caption under the section title says what is missing:
| What is missing | Caption |
|---|---|
| The game isn't finished | “Play and Compare open once the game is finished” |
| No save | “Play and Compare open once a save is attached” |
| Players aren't matched | “Play and Compare open once every player of the save is matched” |
| The save has no statistics | “Compare opens once the save has statistics” |
The site remembers the lens you picked in this browser. If the remembered lens is closed for some game, the page shows the nearest open one: “Play” instead of “Compare”, and if that one is closed too, “Lobby”. With no choice, the page opens on “Lobby”.
The “Play” lens¶
Under the section title is the line “What each player built, fought and adopted” with the number of the turn the save was read at. All cards are read at the last turn of the save. A player who dropped out earlier is read at the last turn they played, and the card says “Out of the game on turn N”. If the save has no player for a seat in the game, the card says “No data for this seat in the save”.
A player's card starts with their name, nation and chart line color. Instead of a rating it has a small “shape” of the player: a tiny picture of the same seven axes as on the radar. Next comes a line about what the player stood out for at the table, and six figures: “Techs”, “Cities”, “Population”, “Units killed”, “Gold” and “Faith”.
- The standout line starts with “Most …” if the player leads the table on that metric. Otherwise it shows a place, for example “2nd in …”. When there is nothing to stand out for, the line shows a dash.
- For the winner, the line shows the win type. If the save itself recorded such a victory, “T N” is added. If the winner has no win type, the line shows a dash.
- The explanation of the shape opens when you point at it, stop on it with the keyboard, or tap it. It's called “Shape of play” and shows each axis with the player's share in percent.
A player's policies¶
A policy is a decision a player adopts in the game, and policies are grouped into branches. The card shows them in two ways.
- The “Policies · N adopted” strip. This is a scale of the game's turns with marks. A low mark is an adopted policy, a tall mark in an era color is an opened branch, and a tall mark in an ideology color is the chosen ideology. Marks of policies that the game didn't confirm are semi-transparent.
- Branch marks. Each branch has its own mark, in the order in which it was opened, and the ideology comes last. A mark shows the branch's symbol, its name, how many policies the player took in that branch, and “T N” for the turn the branch was opened. On a narrow card the marks go one per row, on a wide one two per row.
The era branches are called “Tradition”, “Liberty”, “Honor”, “Piety”, “Patronage”, “Aesthetics”, “Commerce”, “Exploration” and “Rationalism”. The ideologies are “Freedom”, “Order” and “Autocracy”.
If you point at the strip or a mark, or stop on it with the keyboard, a list of the player's policies opens next to the card. A click or Enter pins the list, and a branch mark opens it already on that branch. On a touchscreen, you open the list with a tap. The list has:
- a “{name}'s policies” heading with the player's name, a summary like “9 adopted over 120 turns”, and the ideology;
- a section for each branch with its name and the line “Opened on turn N” (for the ideology, “Chosen on turn N”) and, if the ideology was replaced, “Replaced on turn N”;
- “T N” lines with the policy name;
- the caption “Read from the save of turn N and checked against the game's policy counter.”
A policy that the game's counter didn't confirm is dimmed and has the tag “unconfirmed”: it may not have taken effect. A policy that the player later removed is struck through with the note “removed T N”, and a tenet of a replaced ideology is struck through with the note “replaced T N”.
The compact card has one line: what the player stood out for, and the symbols of their branches. Together, the symbols open the same list.
When policies aren't visible¶
| What the player sees | What it means |
|---|---|
| “Policies are being read” | The site is still reading the policies from the save |
| “No policy data in this save” | The save doesn't contain this data, or its statistics are incomplete |
| “No policies adopted” | The player hasn't opened any branch |
The “Compare” lens¶
Under the section title is the line “Each axis is relative to the players of this game: the outer ring is the most at the table”, again with the number of the turn the save was read at. The lens has three parts: the radar, the turn controls and the table.
The radar draws seven axes: “Science”, “Culture”, “Military”, “Gold”, “Faith”, “Growth” and “Production”. Each axis shows the player relative to the best at the table: the closer to the outer ring, the closer to the leader. “Science” counts researched technologies and science per turn. “Culture” counts accumulated culture and tourism per turn. “Military” counts units killed and production spent on military units. “Growth” counts cities, population and land.
The radar draws only the players ticked in the table. If you played in this game, you start out ticked. Otherwise nobody is, and the radar says “Tick players to draw them”. The ticks reset when you refresh the page, change the lens, move to another game or attach a new save. Hover over a row, or move to it with the keyboard, to see that player's line. The tooltip at a radar vertex names each drawn line, its share in percent and who leads on that axis.
Under the radar is the turn scale with the “Replay” and “Pause” buttons, “Previous turn” and “Next turn”, the “Turn N of M” label and the “Playback speed” choice (1×, 2× or 4×). As you move the scale, you see the radar and the shapes in the table move to the chosen turn. A player who dropped out is shown at their last turn and has no line on the radar.
The table has the columns “Player”, “Shape”, the figures (“Techs”, “Cities”, “Kills”, “Gold” and, on a wide screen, “Culture”) and “Stood out”. Press the “Player” heading or a figure column's heading to sort the table: the first press sorts names from A to Z and figures from the largest, and the second press reverses the order. Players who dropped out and unknown values stay at the bottom.
If the save has no player for any seat in the game, the lens says “No players of the save to compare yet”.
A game without a save¶
Until a save is attached to the game, the “Charts” tab shows a “No save attached” card with the text “Attach a save in the save section to see this game’s charts.” and a “Go to save section” button, which leads to the save section on the same page. The “Play” and “Compare” lenses are dimmed with the caption “Play and Compare open once a save is attached”. The “Lobby” lens works.
What can go wrong¶
- The “Play” or “Compare” lens is dimmed. The caption under the section title says why: the game isn't finished, there is no save, not all players are matched, or the save has no statistics. Fix that, and the lens opens.
- The site shows a different lens than the one you picked. The remembered lens is closed for this game, so the page showed the nearest open one.
- You see “This section could not be shown.” instead of the section. The data didn't load. In the charts block, press “Try again”. In other cases, refresh the page.
- The charts closed by themselves. The game's players were matched differently, and the charts are waiting for confirmation again. Confirm the players in the save section.
