Game panel¶
The game panel is a bot message with a list of recent games and buttons that server players use to create games and open stats. There is no other way to create a game, so a moderator places the panel with /moderator panel right after adding the bot, and moves or restores it with the same command.
What you need¶
Before you place the panel, check three things:
- you have the Discord “Administrator” permission or the server's moderator role: the server owner has all permissions automatically, and “Manage Server” is not enough for this;
- a server admin has set the game gathering channel and the game history channel with
/guild config; - in the channel where the panel will be, the bot has the permissions “View Channel”, “Send Messages” and “Read Message History”.
See Players, moderators and admins and Adding CivBot to a server.
Steps¶
- Pick a channel for the panel. Any text channel that players can see works, including the game gathering channel. The bot always sends gathering cards to the game gathering channel. If the panel is elsewhere, the game creator privately gets a link to their gathering card, and the link disappears after 60 s. Check: the server's players can see the channel you picked.
-
Run the command. Type this in that channel:
Check: a bot message with a list of recent games and the buttons “FFA”, “Duel”, “Player Stats” and “Info” appears in the channel. The bot sends no separate reply to the command. The server's previous panel, if there was one, disappears.
- Check the channels. Press the “Info” button on the panel. Check: the bot privately shows the help card “↗ Explore CivBot features ↗”, where the lines “Games history channel: #…” and “Game collection channel: #…” appear under the “Game modifications” section.
What else you can set up¶
- Move the panel. Run
/moderator panelin the new channel. The bot places a new panel there and removes the old one: a server has one panel. - Record new games in the event log. Turn on the log with
/guild log_channel, and the bot records every game created on the panel there. See Event log.
What the panel shows¶
List of recent games¶
At the top of the panel is a list of up to 15 of the server's latest games, with the newest at the bottom. It includes only games that have already started: gatherings don't appear there.
| Part of the row | What it means |
|---|---|
| Icon | Game state: “In progress”, “Finished” or “Scrap” |
| «>>» | Link to the game thread in the game history channel |
| Number | Game number on this server |
| Mode and type | For example, FFA Patch or Duel Vanilla |
| Players | Names of the players on the server; a name longer than 15 characters is cut off and ends with “...” |
A thread where nobody has written for 24 hours is archived, and then “>>” has no link. You can find such a thread among the archived threads of the game history channel: its name starts with the game number. See Game thread.
A player who has left the server appears in the list under the Discord account name the bot last knew, not under their server nickname.
Until a game has started on the server, the list is replaced by the text “No recent games.”, and after the first start the list fills up. The bot updates the list every 5 minutes, and also right after a game starts, finishes or is scrapped, so you don't need to place the panel again for that. On a server that works with the CivBot site, a player in the game can also finish it on the site; the bot then updates the game thread and the list the same way, within a few seconds. See Finishing a game on the site.
Panel buttons¶
Under the list there are four buttons. Anyone on the server can press them, and only the person who pressed one sees the reply.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| «FFA» | Creates a free-for-all game: the bot privately sends a “Choose game type” message with the buttons “Vanilla”, “Patch” and “KEK”, which stay active for 60 s |
| «Duel» | Creates a two-player game in the same way |
| “Player Stats” | Lets you pick a server member and shows their stats card |
| “Info” | Shows the help card “↗ Explore CivBot features ↗”: game modifications, a link to the CivBot support server, the game history channel and the game gathering channel |
After you pick a type, a gathering card appears in the game gathering channel, and the game creator immediately becomes its first player. You can't create a new LEK game. See Creating a game and gathering players and Player stats.
The player and ban limits for FFA and Duel are the same on all servers, and you can't change them. See Game.
The “Player Stats” and “Info” buttons are labeled in the primary language the server had when the moderator ran /moderator panel. The “FFA” and “Duel” buttons aren't translated. The bot mostly writes replies to the buttons in the Discord client language of the person who pressed the button. The panel buttons keep working after the bot restarts. See Bot language.
What can go wrong¶
- The bot replies “Moderator role not set. Please contact server administrator.” The server has no moderator role yet, and you don't have the “Administrator” permission. Ask a server admin to set the moderator role with
/guild configand give it to you. - The bot replies “You are not moderator.” The server has a moderator role, but you don't have it, and you don't have the “Administrator” permission either. “Manage Server” is not enough for this. Ask a server admin to give you the moderator role. Only you see both replies, and they disappear after 20 s.
- The “Info” button replies “History channel is not set”. The server has no game history channel. Ask a server admin to set it with
/guild config, the “Channels” item in the menu under the settings card. See Adding CivBot to a server. - The panel disappeared from the channel. Its message was deleted, or a moderator placed a new panel in another channel. While there is no panel, the server's players can't create a new game. First look for the panel in the server's other channels. If it isn't anywhere, run
/moderator panelin the channel you want: the bot doesn't restore a deleted panel on its own. - A game you just created isn't in the list. A game gets into the list only after it starts. While the gathering lasts, its card is in the game gathering channel.
- The panel buttons are labeled in another language. The bot labels the buttons in the primary language the server had when you ran
/moderator panel. If the language has changed since, run/moderator panelagain. The buttons are labeled in English when the server's primary language is neither Ukrainian nor Russian, or when it was never set in the community settings: then Discord treats English as the primary language. See Bot language.
