Bot messages

Bot messages are mostly CivBot's private replies to buttons and commands: refusals, errors and confirmations. Find the text the bot showed (everyone in the thread sees the replies to a save in a game thread) and read what happened and what to do next.

On this page: Panel, gathering and game thread, Save in the game thread, Start and nations, Finishing and refreshing, Notifications, Server settings

Panel, gathering and game thread

Replies to the buttons of the game panel, the gathering card and the game thread. The button that joins and leaves a gathering on the gathering card is called “Join | Leave”. See Creating a game and gathering players and Game thread.

Message What happened What to do
“You are not allowed to perform this action.” You pressed a button of a game you don't play in, and you aren't a moderator; a moderator can press “Ready” only when they have joined the gathering themselves Before the start, join the gathering with the join button; after the start, ask a game participant or a moderator to do it for you
“This game has ended or was deleted. Create a new game.” The game the card belongs to no longer exists, so the bot turns off the card's buttons Create a new game on the game panel
“Game creation already in progress...” The bot is still creating your previous game Wait a few seconds and find its card in the game gathering channel
«Invalid Steam lobby link» You pasted a link in a different format into the “Set Steam Lobby Link” window, so the gathering card didn't change Paste only a steam://joinlobby/… link with three numbers separated by slashes

Save in the game thread

This applies on the server the CivBot site works with. When a participant drops a .Civ5Save file into a game thread, the bot usually puts ⏳ on the message, then replies to it with a card in the thread and swaps ⏳ for ✅ or ❌ (the bot rejects a file over the size limit right away, with no ⏳). Below are the texts of the cards, then the reasons for a refusal. The bot writes the cards and buttons in the server language. See Save in the game thread; for the same on the site, see Game saves on the site.

Cards

Every card has an “Open the game” button that leads to the game page on the site.

Message What happened What to do
“Save accepted” or “Turn 120 accepted” and “The save is attached to the game.” The site read the file and attached it to the game; if the save's turn is known, it is in the title Press “Open the game” to see the save's details on the game page
“Save already taken” and “This file was uploaded earlier.” The same file is already in this game Nothing to do
“Save does not fit this game” and “The players or nations in the file differ from this game.” The players or nations in the file don't match this game, so the save isn't attached; the card also has a “Save inspector” button Check that you dropped a save of this very game; you can view the file in the “Save inspector”
“Save taken, not attached” and “This save has no players yet; it looks like an initial autosave. Drop a save from later in the game, best after it ends.” The file has no players yet, so the site read it but didn't attach it to the game Drop a save from a later point in the game
“Save not accepted” and a reason The file was rejected; the reasons are in the table below Do what the table below says

Reasons for a refusal

Message What happened What to do
“Only players of this game can upload a save.” You have no seat in the game, even if you are a moderator Ask a player of this game to drop the save
“This game is not on the site.” The site doesn't know the game whose thread holds the file Check that you dropped the file into the right game's thread
“The ratings of this game are final, new saves are not accepted.” The site already closed the game and calculated the ratings Nothing to do
“This game is cancelled or closed for saves.” The game was scrapped, so it takes no saves Nothing to do
“Too many uploads. Try again a little later.” You already made 10 attempts to upload a save to this game in the last 24 hours Try again later; the limit is described in Limits and timers
“The file is too large for a Civilization V save (16 MB at most).” or “The save is larger than the limit of 16 MB.” The file is over the size limit Drop a smaller save
“The upload took too long. Try again.” The file didn't reach the site in time Drop the file again
“The site is busy reading other saves. Try again in a minute.” The site is busy with other saves Drop the file again in a minute
“The site could not read this file.” or “The site could not read this file in time.” The file isn't a Civilization V save, is damaged, or takes too long to read Check the file in the “Save inspector” and drop another one
“The site did not answer. Try again later.” The site didn't answer in the allotted time Drop the file again later
“Save storage is not set up on the server.” The save storage on CivBot's side isn't ready Report it with the “Report bugs in CivBot” link in the card of the “Info” button on the game panel
“The file could not be stored.” The site read the file but couldn't store it Try again later
“The save could not be processed right now.” or “The save was not accepted.” The bot couldn't process the save Try again later

Reminder after a game finishes

When a game is finished and has no save attached yet, the bot posts the “Keep this game's story” card once in the game thread, with the text “Drop the save file (.Civ5Save) here: the site will show the game's charts and history.” and an “On site” button. A finished game's card has a “Results on site” button, and a scrapped game's card has “On site”. To keep the game's history on the site, drop a save into the game thread.

Start and nations

Replies to the “Bans” menu, the start buttons and the menus in the game thread. See Bans, Starting a game and Picking nations and swapping slots.

Message What happened What to do
“Nation already banned by @Vega.” Another player already banned this nation, and only one player can ban a given nation Pick another nation; you can see other players' bans on the gathering card in the “Bans:” lines
“You can't ban more than 2 nations” You already banned as many nations as the mode allows: 2 in FFA, 3 in Duel To ban another nation, press your banned nation in the “Bans” menu again: the ban is lifted
“Need at least 3 players” There are fewer players than the start needs: 3 in FFA, 2 in Duel Wait for more players; if the server has notifications set up, call them with the “Notify gathering” button
“Not all players are ready” Just as the start button was pressed, someone removed their ready mark, or a new player joined the gathering and hasn't pressed “Ready” yet Ask the players without ✅ on the gathering card to press “Ready”, then start again
«Multiple selection for Orion» In the “Choose who plays which nation” menu, two nations are marked for player Orion, so the bot saved nothing Open the menu again and leave each player one nation
«All your swap requests have been cancelled.» In the “Swap requests between players” menu you picked yourself, and the bot cancelled all your swap requests To request a swap again, pick another player in this menu

Finishing and refreshing

Replies to the /game finish and /game refresh commands and to the “Cancel game confirmation” window. See Finishing a game and Scrapping a game.

Message What happened What to do
“Всі гравці мають вибрати нації перед завершенням гри!” or “All players must pick their nations before finishing!” Some player has no nation picked Make sure every player has a nation in the game thread and run the command again; on the server the site works with, a nation read from an attached save also counts — Save in the game thread
“Переможець має бути гравцем цієї гри.” or “The winner must be a player of this game.” You named a winner who has no seat in this game Pick a player of this game as the winner and run the command again
«Game ID not found.» /game finish was run outside a game thread without the game option Run the command in the game thread or enter the game number in the game option
“Specify game_id or call command from game thread” The bot doesn't know which game you mean: /game refresh was run outside a game thread without the game option, or /game finish or /game refresh was run in a thread that belongs to no game Run the command in the game thread or enter the game number in the game option
«You are not in this lobby.» You entered the number of a game you don't play in, and you aren't a moderator Check the number in the game thread name; if it is right, ask a participant of the game or a moderator to finish it
«Can't do this command in current lobby state.» There is no game with that number, or it isn't in the “In progress” state: it was finished or scrapped Check the number in the game thread name
«Game was already finished by another player or not found. Please refresh to see results.» The game was already finished or scrapped, so the command changed nothing in it and awarded no rating If the game card looks outdated, run /game refresh in the game thread
«Done!» The game is finished: it got the “Finished” state Check the game card in the thread
«Game finished but thread not found.» The game is finished, but the bot didn't find the game thread: for example, it was deleted You don't need to run the command again: the result is recorded
“Гру #248 не знайдено …” /game refresh has the number of a game this server doesn't have Check the number in the game thread name
“Refreshed” /game refresh redrew the game card in the thread with current data Check the game card in the thread
“Game already cancelled or finished” While you were filling in the “Cancel game confirmation” window, the game was already finished or scrapped You can see the game's state on the card in the thread

Notifications

Replies to the “Notify gathering” window and to the /guild notifications commands. See Gathering notification and Setting up gathering notifications.

Sending a notification

Message What happened What to do
“Gathering notification sent.” The notification appeared in the notification channel —
“This game can notify again …” The pause after this game's previous notification is still running, even if another participant sent it Wait for the time the bot shows and try again
“This gathering is already full.” The gathering has no free seats When everyone presses “Ready”, start the game
“This gathering has already ended.” The game already started or the gathering is gone Look for a started game in the game history channel, and create a new one on the game panel
“Gathering notifications are not configured.” The server has no notification channel set Ask a moderator to set up notifications
“Users with the configured restricted role cannot send notifications.” You have a role that moderators barred from sending notifications; the restriction applies to moderators too Ask a gathering member without this role to send the notification
“You are not allowed to perform this action.” You haven't joined this gathering and you aren't a moderator, so the notification wasn't sent Join the gathering with the join button or ask someone from it

“The configured notification role is unavailable.” The notification role no longer exists on the server Tell a moderator: they set notifications up again with /guild notifications configure
“The bot needs Send Messages permission in the notification channel.” The bot doesn't have this permission in the notification channel; the bot reports “View Channel” and “Embed Links” the same way Tell a moderator: the permission is given to the bot in the channel settings
“The configured role cannot be mentioned in the notification channel.” The role can't be mentioned, and the bot doesn't have the “Mention Everyone” permission in this channel Tell a moderator: the /guild notifications status command shows them what's wrong
“Discord rejected the gathering notification.” Discord didn't accept the bot's message, so the pause didn't start Try again

Notification settings

Message What happened What to do
“You are not allowed to perform this action.” Someone who isn't a moderator ran one of the /guild notifications commands Ask a server admin to give you the moderator role
“The bot needs View Channel permission.” The bot doesn't have this permission in the chosen channel, so the settings weren't saved; the bot reports “Send Messages” and “Embed Links” the same way Give the bot this permission in the channel settings and run the command again
“The @everyone role cannot be used for notifications.” The @everyone role is chosen for the mention, so the settings weren't saved Pick a dedicated role in the role option or leave it out
“The role must be mentionable or the bot needs Mention Everyone permission.” The chosen role can't be mentioned, so the settings weren't saved Allow mentioning the role in its settings or give the bot the “Mention Everyone” permission, then run the command again
“Gathering notifications disabled.” This is how the bot replies to /guild notifications disable, and to /guild notifications status when notifications are off To turn notifications on, run /guild notifications configure

Server settings

Replies to the commands of moderators and server admins, to the “Info” button on the game panel and to the “Profile on site” item in the Apps menu. See Adding CivBot to a server, Game panel, Leaderboard and Players, moderators and admins.

«Error: Guild not configured» /leaderboard show was run on a server that has no CivBot settings yet Ask a server admin to set CivBot up with /guild config
“The site does not show this server's games.” You picked the “Profile on site” item (right-click a member, “Apps”) on a server whose games the site doesn't show A player profile opens only on the server the CivBot site works with
“This player has no games on the site yet.” You picked the “Profile on site” item for a member the bot doesn't know yet For the player profile, see Player profile
“Предыдущие сезоны не найдены” /leaderboard season was run without the season_id option, and there are no past seasons yet /leaderboard show posts the current season's leaderboard

General errors

Replies to unexpected failures, the same for different commands, buttons and menus. If a failure repeats, report it with the “Report bugs in CivBot” link in the card that the “Info” button on the game panel opens.

Message What happened What to do
«Something went wrong.» A command or button ended with an unexpected error Tell a server moderator what you did and when
«An error occurred while processing your request.» A failure happened while processing a button or menu Tell a server moderator what you did and when

What can go wrong

  • The reply disappeared before you read it. The bot removes some command refusals on its own. “Game ID not found.”, “Can't do this command in current lobby state.”, “You are not in this lobby.”, “You must be a moderator to use this command.”, “Moderator role not set. Please contact server administrator.” and “You are not moderator.” disappear after 20 s, and “You don't have permissions to do that!” after 3 s. Run the command again to see the reply again.
  • The reply came in Russian or English. The bot shows most of the texts on this page in the language of your Discord client or in the server language. The bot has some replies in English only, for example “Done!” and “Invalid Steam lobby link”, and “Предыдущие сезоны не найдены” in Russian only. The texts on this page are quoted word for word; your nicknames, game numbers and figures will differ. See Bot language.
