Ranks and stars

A rank is a player's rating level from 0 to 5, which the bot shows as stars. It depends on the player's rating on the server in the current season and affects point losses in an FFA game.

What rank does

A rank sums up a player's rating in one number from 0 to 5. The bot uses rank for four things:

  • Shows a player's level. The rank stars appear next to the player on the gathering card, on the game card in the thread and in the leaderboard.
  • Orders the gathering. On the gathering card, players go from the highest rank to the lowest.
  • Calculates losses. A player's rank sets their base loss, and the winner's rank sets the loss multiplier for everyone who lost.
  • Awards a bonus in a rating event. If a rating event with a winner bonus is active, the winner gets extra points for the highest rank among those they beat. See How rating is calculated.

What it includes

There are six ranks. The rating ranges and the base loss are the same on all servers. The base loss is the number of points a player of a given rank loses for a lost FFA game before multipliers.

Rank Rating Base loss
0 0–799 10
1 800–999 15
2 1 000–1 199 20
3 1 200–1 399 25
4 1 400–1 599 25
5 1,600 and higher 25

The final loss also depends on the player's own rating and the winner's rank. See How rating is calculated.

Where you see the rank

The number of gold stars equals the rank: a player with rank 3 has three. Where the bot shows five stars, empty ones follow the gold ones.

Message How the rank shows
Gathering card Only gold stars before the player's mention; a player with rank 0 has no stars
Game card in the thread Five stars in the row with the player's sequence number: gold for the rank, the rest empty
Game card after an FFA game finishes Five stars of the new rank under the row with the rating change
Leaderboard Five stars before the player's mention: gold for the rank, the rest empty
Player stats card A line like “Rank 2 (1000)” for the “Season” period: the rank number and the rating in parentheses
Player card on the game page on the site Five stars: filled for the rank, the rest empty, with the rating “N pts” next to them

This works on the server the CivBot site works with: on the site, rank stars appear only on the player's card on the game page. The leaderboard and the player profile on the site don't show rank stars. See Game page.

After a Duel game finishes or a game is scrapped, the stars stay in the row with the player's sequence number. Such games don't change rating, so the rank stays the same.

A personal icon instead of a star

A player can have a personal icon instead of the gold star. There are as many icons as the rank gives gold stars, and the empty stars stay the usual ones. You see the icon on the gathering card, on the game card and in the leaderboard. The bot owner assigns the icon; the player doesn't pick it.

How it connects

  • Rating — rank depends on the player's rating on the server in the current season; see How rating is calculated.
  • Season — every player starts a new season at rank 2; see Seasons.
  • Gathering — on the gathering card, players go from the highest rank to the lowest; see Creating a game and gathering players.
  • Leaderboard — each player has the stars of their rank next to them; see Leaderboard.
  • Player stats — on the card, the rank is a number next to the rating; see Player stats.

Rules

Rank depends only on rating

Rank is determined by the player's rating and the table in the section “What it includes”. The number of games and wins doesn't affect rank. Game type doesn't matter either: an FFA game of any type — Vanilla, Patch, KEK or LEK — changes the same rating. After every finished FFA game, the bot sets the rank again from the new rating.

Every player starts each season at rank 2

In every season a player starts with a rating of 1,000, which is rank 2 and two stars. The season's rating appears when the player first signs up for a gathering on the server in that season. See Seasons.

Rank is separate on each server

The bot keeps rating, and rank with it, separately on each server. A player who plays on two servers has two independent ranks.

Only finished FFA games change rank

Rating and rank change when an FFA game is finished with /game finish or on the site; the rank is then calculated from the new rating the same way. A Duel game and a scrapped game don't change rank. See Finishing a game and Finishing a game on the site.

There are only six ranks: 0 to 5

Rating never goes below 0, so rank 0 is the lowest. From 1,600 the rating keeps growing, but the rank stays 5.

The winner's rank changes the loss of everyone who lost

The loss of everyone who lost is multiplied by a number that depends on the winner's rank. The winner's rank is taken from their rating before the game.

Winner's rank What the loss is multiplied by
0 1,5
1 1,3
2 1
3 0,8
4 or 5 0,6

A win by a higher-ranked player costs opponents less, and a win by a lower-ranked player costs them more. See How rating is calculated.

A rank has no name and gives no roles in Discord

The bot doesn't give or take away roles for rank. A rank has no name: it shows only as stars and, on the player stats card, as a number.

What can go wrong

  • There are no stars next to your name on the gathering card. The gathering card shows only gold stars, and rank 0 has none. Your rating is below 800: the first star appears when it reaches 800.
  • Rank didn't change after the game. Only FFA games finished with /game finish or on the site change rank. If the game was FFA, the rating may have changed without crossing a rank boundary. You see the rating change on the game card in the thread.
  • The leaderboard shows old stars. The leaderboard updates once an hour. The new stars appear after the next update.
  • You have a different number of stars on another server. Rating and rank are separate on each server. Games on one server don't change rank on another.
  • You have two stars again at the start of a season. Every player starts a new season with a rating of 1,000, which is rank 2. See Seasons.
  • A player has a different icon instead of gold stars. It is the player's personal icon. There are as many icons as the rank would give gold stars, and the empty stars stay the usual ones.
